Hey, my name is Stephanie Fischer, and I’m a musician interested in the sounds of color.

I was born and raised in (the great land of) New York.  I initially started off my life as a dancer; having studied ballet, jazz, hip-hop, and tap for 10 years.  As the years grew by, however, I found that my true love was actually creating the music I was dancing to.

One of my degrees from Stanford University was Music Composition (B.A.), where I studied with Dr. Erik Ulman and Dr. Eoin Callery for composition, and Kathryne Jennings for voice.  (Other degrees include a B.S. in Earth Systems, and a pending Ph.D. in Environmental Justice). I’ve been fortunate to have my works performed by the Saint Lawrence String Quartet, the Stanford Wind Quintet, Stanford TaikoStanford Talisman, and many other talented musicians affiliated with the department.

In also having an extensive science/interdisciplinary background, I find a lot of inspiration from math, physics, and statistics, but what has had the most influence on my music by far is my synesthesia.  I’ve been particularly interested in experimenting with scales and form to translate my associations with color and their internal relations. My ultimate goal as a composer is to eventually translate them insofar as to create aural kaleidoscopes within my works. The pursuit of these interests have caused my works to be quite diverse in medium and scope –including chamber works, multichannel composition, choral + taiko, and even podcasting. Even so, just as the ever-changing kaleidoscope has its points of symmetry, there’s been consistent emphasis of motivic development and musical process within these works.

One of my favorite things to do in addition to composing music, is collaborating across disciplines. I always find that our disciplines complement and elaborate on each other –helping create a more refined, colorful work of art.  A most recent collaboration was with graphic design/illustration/computer science/formatting extraordinaries Jihee Hwang and Vincent Nicandro.

If any of you are also a fan of collaboration, please contact me to see if we may connect on a project!
